Theresa
DeVore
Instrument: Viola
Theresa began learning music when
she was very young, she started playing the piano
at age four and switched to violin when she was eight
in the Davenport public school system. She changed
to viola in high school.
She majored in Music Performance at St. Ambrose College
and performed as soloist with the St. Ambrose Band.
She studied viola under William Hennigbaum for two
years.
After a break of twelve years, Theresa joined the
Augustana Symphony and played with them for twenty
six years. She joined the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra
in the fall of 2008.
She also has performed as principal violist with
the St. Ambrose University-Community Symphony since
it was founded in 2001.
Theresa has performed as a volunteer in orchestras
for various musicals in the Quad Cities for the past
ten years. Most rewarding is the quartet that she
began named Classical Moods which has been performing
for eight years in parks during the summer months
composed of volunteers, playing Joplin Jazz to Paul
Williams, from Mozart to old time tunes, often having
people say, “you know, I used to play with my
high school orchestra” and they are always welcome
to come and play along.
Music enriches Theresa’s life, but is not at
the center. She is a full-time accountant for Quad
City Safety in Davenport. She and her husband, Don,
currently live in Davenport. They have four sons and
eleven grandchildren. They enjoy traveling together,
especially on their motorcycles.
Theresa enthusiastically wants others to experience
the joy one can receive by creating music with others.
She writes, “I want to impress upon anyone that
you do not have to make music a career, but you can
apply it throughout your life. It takes practice,
perseverance, and dedication to make anything in life
worthwhile. Creating art that only exists when a group
of people combine their talent and love of music is
something that we all can share.”
